Elizabeth Shepherd is among Canada's most promising young talents and she has the widespread critical acclaim to prove it. The rave reviews for her first two studio albums as well as sold-out performances at prestigious venues like Tokyo’s Cotton Club, London's Jazz Café and the Hollywood Bowl have been extremely gratifying for Shepherd, but the Toronto-based singer/songwriter/pianist has never been content to rest on past achievements.
Shepherd’s debut Start To Move (2006) and follow-up Parkdale (2008) were both JUNO nominated and described as “pushing the boundaries of jazz”. With the release of her stunning third album Heavy Falls the Night, she pushes well past those boundaries to carve out her own niche of smart, sophisticated and adventurous music.

Heavy Falls the Night takes the listener on an unpredictable musical ride. It's hard to pick a favourite track from such an eclectic album but, depending on your taste, it could be the dancefloor ready Seven Bucks, co-produced by Japanese mixmaster DJ Mitsu The Beats (Dwele, Jose James), and inspired by an NFB documentary. Or it could be The Taking - Shepherd’s powerful tribute to the women who came before her – knocked out in Jazz 11/8 time. Or maybe it’s the supremely soulful reworking of Anne Murray's 70s soft-rock radio staple Danny's Song, one of the few secular songs that made it past the gatekeepers in Shepherd's Salvation Army childhood home.

Elizabeth's rhythmically intricate, groove-oriented tunes, sincere lyrics and distinct, soulful voice have earned her a worldwide following, and her fans will certainly not be disappointed by the explorations on this new record. Critics, hipsters and music aficionados from London to Tokyo have been spreading the word for a few years now, and will surely continue to embrace her music. But more importantly, with Heavy Falls the Night, Elizabeth Shepherd is destined to reach music lovers everywhere.

Lee Fields is a bona-fide, 100%, unadulterated, pure, gut-bucket soul singer. While the crate-digging funk and soul community bestowed "legendary" status upon him due to his undeniably solid series of rare 7" singles (and one LP) recorded and released on his own independent labels in the 70s, he's never been one to sit in a dusty corner. New York production team Truth & Soul (El Michel Affair, Bronx River Parkway), are ready to bring him to light with a brand new album of beat-heavy, deep soul ballads that will show soul-revivalists the world over what real soul is.

When Truth & Soul started in 2004, the first mission of label owners/ producers Jeff Silverman and Leon Michels, was to record a sweet soul record that would be modeled after the near perfect formula that bands like The Moments, The Delfonics, and The Stylistics had created, but with a decidedly modern bend.

Four years later and Lee Fields & The Expressions have successfully created a unique and personal sound that can hold court with the bands they set out to emulate. However, what they’ve created in the process goes beyond just a carbon copy of a sweet soul music from the 60's and early 70's. The formula has remained the same but the style has been adapted for the ears of youngsters whose experiences with soul may began with Amy Winehouse. Thirty years of retrospection has colored this cross-generational melding of the minds. It sounds odd on paper, but the results are classic: hip hop-reared record collectors come full circle to produce an album of beautiful soul music with one of the progenitors who made it all possible.

Just when you thought the Swedish invasion was over, Do Right! Music is thrilled to present the QUIET NIGHTS ORCHESTRA, yet another awesome export from the stoopidly diverse Stockholm scene.

Don't be fooled by the QNO's placid sounding handle, there's nothing stodgy about these eight bold souls -- led by trombone titan Peter Fredriksson and featuring the seductively swoopingvoice of Sofie Norling -- are among the hottest young jazz talents in Scandinavia. Now they're poised to take on the world.

The QNO's astonishingly tight Chapter One debut combines the sophisticated swing of a classic Blue Note set with the cool precision and propulsive grooves that exemplify the very best of the Nordic jazz tradition. But this creative crew isn't stuck in the past. The QNO's club ready joints, like their Latinesque heater The Search, and their modalicious Helsinki (recently given a broken beat retouch by Nils Krogh), are already getting spins from tastemaking selectas like BBC ace Gilles Peterson, dancefloor don Nicola Conte and Belgium's DJ Nova from Beyondjazz who know a good thing when they hear it. You'll know it too!

Do Right! mastermind John Kong does such a incredible job of running the eclectic Toronto-based indie label, it's easy to forget his other job is rocking parties around the globe as an in-demand club DJ. Through his closely knit network of adventurous artists, forward-looking producers, and on-point remixers, he's constantly accumulating the sickest joints you've never heard.

Rather than stockpiling the potential floor fillers, Kong has thoughtfully compiled the bangin' best of of the previously unreleased heat on That's How We Do Right!

The genre-defying disc's 12 exclusive leftfield tracks range from nasty nu-jazz to whumping dubstep, delirious deep house and broken beat badness featuring notable contributions from Detroit don Alton Miller, Chicago's finest K Alexi and Dresden glitch guru Jacob Korn. From the UK, Simbad offers a wicked revision of Elizabeth Shepherd's Shining Tear Of The Sun, while the Souljazz Orchestra's Parasite gets a stripped down Life Boogie makeover. Canada's left coast is well-represented by Vancouver's 1 Luv along with the ever-soulful Cutty Lark and Black Top who benefit from the vocal sweetening of rising star Colin Pombo, VanCity's answer to Shuggie Otis, for real.

Tomorrow's sound today. That's how we Do Right!

LOTD is pleased to start '09 off with this 2-track offering that sees Tony continue his melodic march through the realms of deep techno.

As a recording artist he is a relative newcomer – as a DJ he has been well-respected in Manchester's underground club scene for quite some time. He grew up in Liverpool, listening to the Soul, Disco and Funk records of his father. Being down with a crew from Manchesters neighborhood Old Trafford called The Rebels In Effect, Hip Hop shaped his future musical direction. Up to now he has deejayed at almost all relevant clubs in Manchester & around the world. Spinning rare groove, techno and deep house records, Lionni's profound knowledge of the history of black music makes his techno tracks so striking and soulful.

LOTD remains steadfast in it’s endeavours to offer the best in left-field electronic dance music with these 2 tracks from Tony Lionni. "Golden" is an eight and a half minute journey beginning with stripped down Detroit’ish synths and ending in more lush, piano & percussion driven territory, with vocal samples being laid overtop the entire ride. EPIC stuff. “The Warrior” is a deep, late-night affair with shades of Chicago jack & echoes of Basic Channel dubness. Both of these tracks display Tony’s depth of musical knowledge while having there sights set firmly in the now & beyond.

It has been a year and one Juno nomination since the release of Elizabeth Shepherd’s album Parkdale. We are releasing an exclusive dubstep remix of Shining Tear Of The Sun by UK's own Simbad.

Simbad, a multi-instrumentalist / producer / DJ, who in recent years has become known for his remixes for the likes of Jose James, and Karizma, has produced under numerous aliases such as Mowgly and Loose Ensemble. His best known work to-date is perhaps for the soul-boogie, beat-heavy single “Soul Fever” released on Raw Fusion Recordings in Sweden. It was championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson and Benji B, and solidified Simbad as one of the key figures of the new generation of beat-makers. This catchy Dubstep remix of ‘Shining Tear of the Sun’, is best described as a fusion of jazz and electronic sounds. With dubbed keys, filtered vocals, heavy low-end, characterized by dub-steppin’ breakbeats, and Simbad’s signature written all over it, makes it one to grow on for the discerning dancefloor or selected fine stereo around the globe.

It's daunting when any album begins with a timpani and bars of classical dramatics, but the moment that Heidi Happy's (aka Priska Zemp) voice launches over the orchestrated musical journey, you are in safe hands. She pulls from classical and jazz and backs this up using flute, violin, viola, cello, vibes, Fender Rhodes and, even glockenspiel. But some of her most touching moments happen when paring back and using simple guitar and voice to tell a love song.

Although she was honoured as the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation's 'Swiss Top' winner in 2007 for her music, the bright-eyed Lucerne Rock City pop singer only officially began her recording career in 2005. O-o-oh, the first single on "Flowers, Birds and Home" is perhaps the best direction on how to approach the singer whose feet stand in pools of indie alternative folk and pop jazz at the same time.

Choosing to write and produce with the authority of a well-travelled singer-songwriter, Heidi Happy's tunes are filled with a nascent dark romanticism. There is an old-timey modernism here, one that takes artful to a new level. It's as if Joanna Newsom was giving pointers and Joni Mitchell took on the story. Everything is full and acutely personal.

Although she was honoured as the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation's 'Swiss Top' winner in 2007 for her debut album 'Back Together', the bright-eyed Lucerne Rock City pop singer only officially began her recording career in 2005.

In concert, she's as creative as her music. Seeing her play crowds in her home country, you might encounter an eight-piece band filled with Switzerland's best. Elsewhere, she solos using looping pedals. It's that mix of acoustic instrumentation and the awareness of available technology that put this young singer ahead of most on tour.

We had a remix contest for Abdominal's “Pedal Pusher” on myspace a while back. The point was to eventually release the winner’s entry. We ended up getting so many good entries however, that we decided we had to include a few of the runners-up as well. So this little remix EP you’re about to download includes said winner (The Plain Ensemble, hailing from Eugene, Oregon), as well as 2 other mixes…1 from The Commonwealth (a production duo out of Toronto & Chicago respectively), & the other from DJ Maniphest (who’s from Milton Keynes, over in the UK).

We also included a live version of the tune, recorded with Abdominal's new band, “The Obliques”. And then, just because we’re good sports, we’ve also tacked on a few other hard to find remixes & tidbits. You’ve got remixes for “Abdominal Workout” from both Natural Self and Jellybass, as well as “Satan Music” (a tune which came out as the bonus cut on a UK only 12"), & “Beatbox Shit” (up for a Grammy this year in the “most creative song title” category…fingers crossed!!), which has never before seen the light of day. So buy the tracks individually, as you see fit, or take the plunge & shell out for the whole shebang.

Avalanche To Wandering Bear is the record that Valery Gore wanted to make since she began writing songs. The curiosity, trepidation, and victory of discovery are wrapped in a heavy dose of danceable rhythms, soul, and humour. With its tumbled lyrics, unconventional arrangements, and progressive piano, Avalanche sets the mood for a bold audio journey. The album features a handful of stand out tracks; “Shoes of Glass” has lush vocal harmonies and a steady 1950’s momentum. “Worried Head” is charismatic in its lyrics and full with driving Motown horns. “Scared” pays homage to jazz fusion singer Karin Krog and lends an esoteric metaphor to the album name. The harmonium arrangement and solid piano of "Consolation" is a rough outline of Gore's admiration of producer Jon Brion's work.

Valery Gore’s words and music transcend emotions, force you to gear-down and listen, feel. Avalanche to Wandering Bear is Valery’s “lifejacket to the drowning.”

The Souljazz Orchestra’s debut album on the Do Right! label, “Freedom No Go Die”, has come to receive rave reviews from critics and fans alike, its lead-off track reaching the Top 10 of the Year on Gilles Peterson’s BBC Radio 1 Show, as voted by the listeners. “Freedom No Go Die” also became one of the biggest selling afrobeat albums of the year in France. It has been featured on numerous compilations and has managed to climb charts not only at home but abroad as well. Since the release of “Freedom No Go Die”, the SJO has been tirelessly touring the festival circuit across Europe and Canada, amassing quite an international following. The band now returns in full force with their new album “Manifesto”.

Building on the success of their previous effort, the SJO has upped the ante with this latest album. “Manifesto” reflects the various influences picked up from the band’s travels across the globe, making for a uniquely rich array of sounds. Their powerful chants, majestic brass, overheated organs, chicken-scratch guitars, hypnotic bass and poly-rhythmic percussion work mix tropical funk and spiritual jazz to the band’s signature militant afrobeat. The Souljazz Orchestra also cast their net wider with this latest effort, delving into the traditions of ancient folk tales and spirituality, while keeping their message politically conscious.

Now in their 7th year as a band, the multicultural collective from Ottawa has had the honour of sharing the stage with the likes of Femi Kuti, Etta James and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. They have performed to crowds in venues around the globe, including France, England, Scotland, Denmark, Austria, Hungary and the United States. “Manifesto” is the fruit of the Souljazz Orchestra’s relentless touring, containing songs that have developed organically over the course of hundreds of live performances.

Tokyo native, Berkley College of Music grad, Jun Miyake has lived in Boston, New York and currently sets up camp in Paris. Artist, composer, arranger, producer and musician, Jun is a multi-talented performer. In his album, Stolen From Strangers, Jun flirts with the surreal and the fantastic. Taking the listener on a trip from Brazil to Paris with a lay over in Tokyo never has the world's music been integrated so cohesively.

Jun has released 13 albums in his native Tokyo. He's co-produced with the likes of Arto Lindsay, Hal Willner and Vinicius Cantuaria. Jun impresses upon everyone his talent and vision. At times cinematic, his compositions are moody, conjuring visual scenes' pictures to sounds to his unusual, otherworldly instrumental scoring.

Discovered by Jazz legend Terumasa Hino, Jun began his career as a Jazz trumpeter, and it didn't take long before he began popping up on recordings from Ron Carter to Grace Jones to Al Foster, to name a few. He quickly segued into composing music for commercials, thousands of theme so chances are your favourite jingle is one of Jun's scores. Jun also works composing music for theatre and feature films, composing for Oliver Stone, as well as dance, working with choreographer Philippe Decouflé.

The album is a must-hear from start to finish, mixing all styles and genres to create a hybrid of musical genius. With the authentic vocals of Arto Lindsay, Lisa Papineau and Arthur H. Stolen From Strangers is a soundtrack for everyman.

Just as Elizabeth Shepherd is a person on the mend, so is the neighbourhood of Parkdale—which becomes the allegory for Shepherd's growth and exploration. As an up-and-coming area of the city, it mirrors Shepherd's artistic career. She has written the majority of her songs in this lieu and the lyrics show a fondness mixed with aversion that one can only feel for something one has grown to love. Parkdale, the area, becomes synonymous with the theme of regeneration—a renaissance, for all intents and purposes. The self-proclaimed artistic hub of Toronto, Shepherd engages the listener in a character study of her niche and neighbours.

‘Parkdale’ is Elizabeth Shepherd's follow-up full-length album to her acclaimed debut, ‘Start to Move’. Her quintet consists of Shepherd on piano and vocal, Scott Kemp on bass, Colin Kingsmore on drums, Roman Tome on percussion and William Sperandei on trumpet. Produced by applauded British Indie-Jazz sensation Ben Lamdin of Nostalgia 77, Parkdale is an older, wiser Shepherd teamed with her ever youthful, graceful soul. The words speak of longing and despair. Underlying the pain of growth and turmoil it brings, is the of assurance of light at the other end and the promise of wisdom that only time and experience can impart. Shepherd speaks to her audience about her condition—candidly singing her heart on her sleeve.

The mood of ‘Parkdale’ tracks the emotional whirlwind of human experience. The album explores what everyone fears the most; total openness, divulging your innermost humanity. "Parkdale", the title track, explores the nuances brokeness within the community. Leading the listener through her story. "I've always found strange the massive discrepancy between the highly emotional events that shape our personal lives, that we generally don't share, and the completely mundane events that insidiously make their way into conversation." "Sicilienne" featuring the renowned Toronto's Jazz guitarist Reg Schwager, speaks directly to the related theme of longing. There is nothing more universal than the longing - most would reluctantly say they're all too familiar with its shades. Unabashedly honest emotion, Shepherd's lyrics resonate through their innocent frankness.

Today, Hip Hop is an overcrowded, saturated musical genre that is riddled with sub genres; club hits and gangster rap, backpackers and true school heads. Amongst them all stands Justis aka Justin Vail, hailing from Kitchener-Waterloo, Canada to drop his debut solo project entitled 'Just Is'. This album sheds the skin of everyday gimmicks, and avoids being pigeon holed by typical overdone formats. It's the modern hip hop music for people who dance, listen, love and live.

Through out the album, Justis maintains a sincere demeanor as he takes you though his day to day life. Seamlessly, his raps weave well thought patterns over hard hitting instrumentals as he reveals himself to the listener. Expressing concerns, triumphs, stresses and joys, Justis speaks to listeners as equals. On songs such as "Get It Right" and "Down" his earnest swagger and playfulness with words travels over his own brand of bouncy, jazz based production, that will make even the most judgmental of hip hop purest pull a neck muscle.

A small group of talented producers lend their efforts on this project which helps to make 'Just Is' sound like a complete album, rather then a collection of poorly planned attempts at radio hits; a rarity in today's climate. Young production virtuoso, Mantis, pounds out everything from the melodic, such as "Spill the wine" a hypnotizing song well explained by it's title, to the high energy like "Weekend", a tune that's all about letting loose and forgetting the weeks troubles.

Justis also enlists production from abroad with the uplifting cut "Try'n to Live" courtesy of The Drum Brothers (France); a song which speaks to the everyday fears of 20somethings making their way in the world. This soulful, motivating cut features the powerful voice of singing talent Rufus on the hook to help finish off what is bound to become a classic.

Adding to the Diversity of the album, Justis teams up with Canadian Fusion Jazz quartet Ace Kinkaid. The team can be heard on such songs as "Music for a Rainy Day" and the already well known "Jazz Music". The smoothed out, and at times of kilter combination of the two makes for an inventive sound that will be loved by any music fan.

'Just Is' is the album that urban music fans and lovers of all things grooved out can appreciate. Very seldom is there an artist, like Justis, who has the talent and charisma to speak so honestly to listeners while still being musical. Justis will make sure you can't ignore his efforts.

Shepherd speaks to her audience about her condition candidly singing her heart on her sleeve.

This is the first single off her album Parkdale. This limited edition 7" comes with a B-Side not available in the album. It's an alternate version of the title track featuring the Nostalgia 77 quartet recorded in London

Required Listening 2 begins its aural tour of Canada with a recording of Toronto Mayor David Miller on the mic introducing the unofficial Toronto anthem, "T'ode" by Abdominal. This dope lyrical tribute to Toronto or the "Screwface Capital"(a term coined by local emcee Theology 3) also features the mad-talented Toronto crew "Notes to Self". "T'ode"solidifies Abs' position in the hip-hop game as one of the most versatile and innovative emcees around.

Bringing the glitchy, bouncy, nu-soul is Vancouver's Sekoya, featuring the sexy, engaging vocals of Amalia Townsend with the track "Loves in Need". Amalia has worked with Swedish producer extraordinaire Opolopo, Compost Records' Eddy Meets Yannah, and Afronaught of the almighty Bugz in the Attic crew to name a few. Sekoya is an amalgamation of Greg Huchinson and Reuben Rogers, the critically acclaimed jazz musicians from the Joshua Redman Quartet as well as founding member Vinstar Kearley.

Representing Montreal is Ghislain Poirier, known as "The King of the Bounce". His well-known Montreal party "Bounce La Gros"and his signature raga style riddems and deconstructed hip-hop, has led him to collaborate with TTC, LoFi Hi-Tek and remixed the likes of Les Georges Leningrad and Lady Sovereign. (Poirier has since moved on to become Lady Soverign's tour DJ!) His track "Pou Ki Sa dub" featuring the Creole singing of Montreal's Nik Myo, has that late night, dirty, dub-step sound.

Wrapping up the East coast meets West cost journey is Toronto's much-loved hip-hop aficionados Circle Research drop their neck snapping remix of indie-rock track "My Sword Hand's Anger"by Apostle of Hustle and flip it giving it a head-nodding re-edit after winning their remix contest.

Vancouver’s Cobblestone Jazz, a band comprised of world-renowned techno producer Mathew Johnson, programmer Tyger Dhula and keyboardist Danuel Dante who are known for their hype live shows and their jazzy, minimal techno sound heard on the track “Creator”. Johnson’s own tracks have received critical acclaim and have been caned by Laurent Garnier, Richie Hawtin and Tiga. Cobblestone Jazz has been steadily creating a buzz around Europe, and was recently featured on Gilles Peterson on BBC Radio 1.

Also representing the West Coast is 8-member band 1 Luv along with vocalists Amaila Townsend, Deanna Teeple and Dawn Pemberton. Their groovy, soulful, jazzy house track “Starz” explains why this band was discovered by uber-crew Jazzanova and was featured on their Secret Love 2 Folk compilation and how their music has been finding its way into the crates of people like Phil Asher, Osunlande and Benji B. Starz is taken from 1 Luv’s debut album Neophilia on Sonar Kollektiv.

Vancouver is best known for its beautiful terrain, incredible climate and overall easy going vibe. These days Vancouver is gaining the reputation as an epicentre of dope music Holding down the brukbeat vibes on the West Coast is dancefloor killah Aklimatize, who’s party rockin’ brokenlatinosoul sound has taken him across the globe, he has collaborated with Zed Bias and SA:RA and remixed Bugz in the Attic. Aklimatize stylings can be heard on the afro-latino inspired broken beat stomper “Dime La Verdad”.

On the flip, Dante & Dhula who also do double duty with Cobblestone Jazz switch up the vibe, taking a dubby, down tempo journey with the track “Why Do the Wicked Ones Rule” which has been played by the like of Toshio Matsuura and Gilles Peterson.

Required Listening 1 was a taste of what was being cooked up in Toronto’s backyard, Volume 2 expands the terrain to show the rest of the world what’s blowing up in Vancouver, Toronto, as well as Ottawa and Montreal. Compiler & Do Right label boss John Kong continues his journey across Canada to join the dots between hip-hop, funk, soul, future-jazz, broken-beat, house, techno and everything in between. Required Listening 2 is the second volume in this compilation series that really does require listening.

Although 'Start to Move 'would be found in the jazz section at your local music shop, Elizabeth's blend of jazz-funk, soul, blues and samba reaches far beyond just the jazz massive. 'Besides' is a collection of dancefloor remixes, b sides, exclusives and unreleased gems that will appeal to all music lovers.

Besides begins with Elizabeth belting out her new single, a bossa-tinged rendition of Lionel Hampton's "Midnight Sun". This up-tempo, feel-good, soundtrack to the summer features her Trio, Scott Kemp on Bass, Colin Kingsmore on Drums, and Elizabeth on Piano and Vocals. Next up, highly sought after UK Tru Thoughts producer Nostalgia 77, gives 'Reversed' some tough drums, finger-snapping bass and a heavier, funk-influenced sound. 'Just Getting By' is Elizabeth's take on the sad state of affairs that most artists have to face, as she sings about having to "wait tables just to make bread". Croatia's Eddy Meets Yannah of Compost Records, turn 'Just Getting By' out on a twisted brokenbeat tip but drench the track with layers of soulful keys giving it that warm, blessed out vibe. Prolific Toronto producer Alister Johnson takes the track 'Circles' and completely reworks the entire song into a soulful, bumpin', jazz groove. He drops a deep and funky bassline, adds a dope hip-hop beat, some complex synths and new instruments including live saxophones performed by Arthur Kerekes. Tokyo's Daisuke Tanabe of Fluid Ounce, known for his signature electronic bleeps and dubby beats, actually samples and loops Elizabeth humming at the beginning of crowd favourite 'Georges Dilemma' and uses it as the bassline on this future-jazz remix. 'Start to Move' is the title track of the album where Elizabeth pays homage to the jazz greats of the past, but remains rooted in her own style. Rising UK producer Natural Self takes this gorgeous tune and turns it into a jazz-funk dancefloor stomper with stunning horns and a dirty, bumpin', bassline. 'Reversed' gets a second working over by Toronto multi-talented producers, Circle Research as they flip the track on a hip-hop tip, dropping sound effects and scratches - this was the demo before they even recorded the album version. 'Georges Dilemma' also receives an alternative take with a dancefloor oriented jazz version. Other exclusives include Elizabeth's late-night jam of Pierre Leduc's 'Soya', the stunning version of Chick Corea's 'Open Your Eyes', as well as her live-in-session recording of 'Just Getting By' for Gilles Peterson's Worldwide radio show on BBC Radio 1. Also included is her new song 'One Trump Card', a beautiful and bluesy tune that will send shivers running up and down your spine.

'Besides' picks up from where 'Start to Move' left off, maintaining jazz aesthetic while fusing the original recordings with fresh new dancefloor focused sounds and styles, redefining the way people think about jazz.

Just when you thought hip-hop was getting stagnant, just when you thought hip-hop was only about the dollar bill and just when you thought you'd heard all that Canada has to offer, comes an emcee from Kitchener, Ontario that just is, hip-hop. Just like his rhymes, his tag is all about clever word play. It can be pronounced as "Just Is" or "Justis". With heap loads of stories to share Justis is proud to admit that his raps are about life and his dedication to hip-hop and not about flossing and braggadocio. Justis reflects on his music as hip-hop created with heart, soul and thought.

"Jazz Music", a stormer of a tune, features the smooth but twisted flow of Justis over the dope live sounds of well respected local band Ace Kincaid. The intro creeps in slowly with a mellow vibe of high hats and snares and a layering of keys, setting the vintage tone for when the beat drops and Justis starts to spit. The song tells the story of how his dad got him interested in music at an early age. From Miles Davis to Charles Mingus and John Coltrane, Justis pays tribute to the jazz greats of the past and their influence in his sound and style.

As well as being a dope wordsmith, Justis is also skilled in the art of beat making and playing instruments. He is well versed on the sax and harmonica and dabbles with bass guitar and keys. The catchy, feel-good, party joint "Down" has Justis flexing his skills on the mic and on the production. "Down" is Justis' mantra; all he wants to do is get down and invites all like-minded individuals to do the same.

"I am hip hop" is a straight-up, boom bap head-nodder, produced by Justis' longtime friend, Mantis. With a title like this, some may find Justis' attitude to be a little cocky, but after listening to the verses and hook, it's apparent that Justis eats, sleeps and breathes hip-hop. "It has been the biggest influence on me and has shaped my whole life and I'm sure a lot of other people can relate to that", says Justis. "I am hip hop" is about the plight of a hip-hop head and is devoted to all those that share the all encompassing hip-hop life and culture. Justis recounts his own introduction to the music; hanging with older cats, tagging spaces, rocking Jordan's and shell toes and driving around listening to Pete Rock and CL Smooth.

A lover of the old school, but growing up in the new school, Justis fuses the quality elements of classic rap with a future flavour, bringing his own form of justice to the hip-hop game.

Escape From The Pigeon Hole, the first solo record by Abdominal, featuring production by DJ Format, Cut Chemist (from Jurassic 5), Young Einstein (from Ugly Duckling), DJ Fase, DJ Serious, Circle Research, cuts by World DMC champion DJ Dopey, and a special appearance by Elizabeth Shepherd, the record promises to be Abdominal's richest, most vibrant, most artistically diverse project to date. "My goal is to show a more complete picture of who I am."

The tracklisting is filled with concept songs, ranging from stories about being a bike courier, open relationships, not giving a f**k, and his cat. Strong lyricism, detailed imagery, plenty of humour, and the illest of flows carry through the album beautifully, from start to finish. Abdominal is not only escaping the pigeon hole - he is leaving it far behind in his pedal-pushing dust.

When a band is called The Souljazz Orchestra, there is a certain expectation to uphold that name and to provide a sound that accompanies such a title; this band accomplishes just that and more. Hailing from Ottawa, The Souljazz Orchestra combine jazz, funk, African and Latin music while touching on politics and spirituality. Think - James Brown meets up with Tito Puente and they all hook up to jam at Fela Kuti's house.
Their versatile sound is in part due to the diverse musical backgrounds of the band's individual members: jazz, funk, blues, reggae, classical, and traditional Cuban, Brazilian and West African percussion. The Souljazz Orchestra are known for their captivating live shows and have collaborated with notable artists such as Beautiful Nubia and Mighty Popo and have opened up for Etta James, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and more.

With one critically acclaimed album under their belt, the Souljazz Orchestra are back with their second album Freedom No Go Die, this high-energy release focuses mainly on afro beat music and features the vocals of Mighty Popo, Alanna Stuart and Marielle Rivard. The album is already creating a buzz on the dancefloor jazz scene and receiving worldwide attention. But it's the track 'Mista President' that is blowing up the spot! The single has been getting mad support and airplay by the likes of Gilles Peterson, Spiritual South and Dom Servini. With its raw blaring horns, dusty keyboards, storming percussion and conscious lyrics it's no surprise this funky, up-tempo afro beat killer was voted the number 9 'Track of the year 2006' on the Gilles Peterson's "Worldwide" radio show on BBC Radio One, before its official release on Do Right Music

Out-Of-Print

Wouldn't we all love to leave our dull, grey cubicles behind if the rent could still get paid? This is the theme behind "Day Job", the fun, catchy song about the monotony of the everyday 9-5 grind by local Toronto acoustic folk-soul-pop outfit Sunshine State. The band formed when good friends, musician/producer James Bryan (Philosopher Kings) and singer/songwriter Aleza, decided to make music about modern life and love as a form of musical therapy.

Alister Johnson, and Circle Research remixes turn 'Day Job' into a night time affair that is dedicated to all those who live the double life; office by day, musician after dark or to those that think a song about dental plans, muffin breaks and ergonomic chairs is just plain funny.

At a time when rap is more about the flash and less about the rhyme, it"s refreshing to hear insightful yet hard-hitting slices of hip hop. Anonymous Twist delivers the straight goods using his technical and creative merit rather than relying on shock value. Twist is the master multi-tasker: he's behind the board, on the cut and spitting on the mic. "Sweet Sixteen" is a stormer of a tune with an interesting concept. The title refers to the standard number of bars a verse will stretch for in a hip hop song. It is typically how a rapper is measured, what they do in those 16 bars. If this is the case then both Asia and Twist's verses should be off the scale! This stone cold killer with it's heavy and dirty bassline, and an eerie Theremin inspired melody serve as a tasty background for Planet Asia to drop his ill 16 bar verse about life, death and spirituality. Twist comes in without missing a beat, keeping the necksnapping vibe going and complementing Asia perfectly, ensuring this track's status as a rewind certainty.

"Respect That" is the chunky beat driven monster of a B-side with A.T. kicking lyrics in his clear baritone voice and smooth yet well-enunciated and distinctive flow. He spits about different facets of hip hop and building respect and likens the artform to literally developing a structure brick by brick.

If "Respect That" and "Sweet Sixteen" are any indication of the dopeness to come, then expect big tidal waves from this artist who has a true understanding of hip hop culture: the roots of the artform, and a vision for taking it into the future.

Nostalgia 77 (aka Ben Lamdin) first burst onto the music scene with his heavy, new funk sound in 2002. Nostalgia's style can be described as a combination of soul and jazz composition with computer based production techniques. He is known for his tasty jazz reworks, which tend to include a touch of raw funk to mix things up a bit. This formula certainly works well on Reversed; from the extended drum breaks to the snappy horns, his version sounds very much like a freshly discovered soul 7inch from a dusty old record warehouse.

Only 500 copies have been pressed of this special collectors edition 7"

Imagine a cold winter night in Toronto, walking past a small jazz club, when you catch through the folds of your scarf the warm deep grooves of a jazz trio playing to an intimate crowd. Welcome to the scene a fresh new sound from Elizabeth Shepherd Trio.

There are times when something new comes along at once familiar and yet completely original. The album ‘Start to Move’ from the Elizabeth Shepherd Trio is just that. But what’s more she has added her own unique blend of jazz-funk, soul, blues, and samba to the fundamentals of Jazz – improvising a deep driving bass from Scott Kemp, the swinging beat of the drum from Colin Kingsmore, and Elizabeth’s playful piano and captivating voice to tie it all together. Recorded over the winter of 2005/2006, you can feel yourself with them, locked away in a small studio, protected from the cold winter night, pushing through track after track for that deep warm sound.

Elizabeth's lyrics sing to us her struggle to find a place in a dynamic yet crowded jazz scene, as well as drawing on stories of love and life. From the jazz funk of ‘Reversed’ to the samba beats of ‘Melon’, the hip hop influenced ‘George’s Dilemma’ and the swinging modal of ‘Roots’, the Elizabeth Shepherd Trio has given us music that seems effortless in its perfection, displaying her talents and the remarkable chemistry she shares with her band to never compromise her style for those seeking tradition.

Growing up in Peterborough, NH, a small town in north eastern US, Alister Johnson aka DJ Catalist, drew his first influences from the sounds of hip-hop producers DJ Premier, RZA, Pete Rock & Large Professor. Armed with a turntable and Cool Edit, an audio sampling program popular in the day, he soon began making hip-hop beats of his own.

Alister has given his special touch in production to remixes for artists such as Feist, Hird w/ Yukimi Nagano, LAL, Layah Jane, Voice, to name a few. When he is not working on tracks for other artists, Alister is making music with a team of writers at The Hive for television shows and commercials.

As Catalist, Alister has produced for local MCs Louwop the Dirty General and Scot Free; but he is perhaps best known for his production efforts on the 'unofficial' remixes, the DJ Catalist re-edits, of Nina Simone, James Brown, Love, Ruth Brown, and Billie Holiday. These demo versions have been circulating among DJs around the world, and have been playlisted by the likes of Quantic, and Gilles Peterson on BBC Radio One..

His debut single, "Like A Star" (Do Right) features the vocals of Vancouver based Alonzo as well as local artists Chris Rouse & Leonie Griffiths. In fact, Alister loves this song so much that he has created 3 versions, all of them unique and outstanding - take your pick.

Whether he is creating music for television commercials, or music for a hip-hop MC to spit their best over, Alister has become one of the fastest uprising artists to look out for in 2006. Stay tuned for more from this multitalented and diverse producer

READY OR NOT, here we come with the second volume of the critically acclaimed collection of lost Canadian jazz treasures from the CBC archives. During the 60s and 70s, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation sought out. the finest jazz musicians in Canada and recorded them improvising live in a small combo setting to document their work for posterity. A few vinyl LPs of each session were pressed up but most this incredible music has been gathering dust in the CBC archive for more than 30 years.

Do Right Music went straight to the source and secured the rights from CBC to re-release these incredible overlooked recordings, tracked down the original analog session tapes and remastered the recordings to state-of-the-art standards. The first READY OR NOT collection drew critical raves in the UK, Europe, Japan and in Canada where Coda's associate publisher Daryl Angier devoted an entire editorial page in the March 2006 issue of the venerable jazz journal to shouting it's praise. In addition, READY OR NOT's dancefloor ready tracks continue to receive heavy club spins around the globe from celebrated Djs Nicola Conte, Quantic, Rainer Truby, Kyoto Jazz Massive, and Movement Collective.

Due to popular demand, Do Right boss John Kong and Toronto-based music journalist Tim Perlich have dug even deeper to come up with another mindblowing selection of soulfully deep and seriously swinging jazz gems for READY OR NOT's second volume.

READY OR NOT fans will be thrilled that four of volume one's stars, Fred Stone, Emile Normand, Nick Ayoub and the recently departed Billy Robinson are back for an encore, joining seven more fabulous contributors including the Alvinn Pall Sextet, groundfloor bop pianist Sadik Hakim, Vancouver's freaky-fine Sunship Ensemble, along with Toronto scenemakers Ted Moses and pianist Bernie Senensky, who shows he could get surprisingly funky back in the day with the first recording of his signature tune Beloved Gift.

Among the many highlights are a super-rare early 60s broadcast transcription of Montreal's Yvan Landry Quartet giving Jean-Pierre Ferland's somber standard Ton Visage a radically raging overhaul. And you won't believe that Lynda Niles of the Montreal Black Community Youth Choir was just 16 years old when she accompanied herself on piano for a stirring rendition of Tryin' Times that rivals Roberta Flack's own.

As a special bonus, promising Do Right Music signee Elizabeth Shepherd offers an entrancing French language version of Ferland's classic ballad Ton Visage and then demonstrates her pianistic chops by charging through Pierre Leduc's Soya (from READY OR NOT Volume 1) which underscores the timeless quality of this outstanding music. Like they say, it's yours to discover.

Do Right! Music is raising the stakes with the new single 'Royal Flush' by megacity hip hop artist/producer Owen Chaim aka DJ Apollo aka Anonymous Twist. Rapping with deliberate eloquence over the beats he bangs out on his own MPC 60, the track's funky bassline and witty poker-inspired rhymes are already appearing on playlists from London to Brooklyn, and back home.

The multitalented Anonymous Twist has been receiving a lot of love lately. Earlier this year, he was featured in a station ID for MuchVibe that showcased his DJ and MC skills simultaneously. After being invited to perform at the 416 Graffiti Expo, he left audiences in awe as he rapped over his own beats that he backspinned, scratched and juggled.

While many rappers may resort to brag about how much narcotic weight they sell, 'Twist reluctantly admits that he's a licensed full-time pharmacist. Yet this is the very testament to the self reliant, independent ethos that he set out to embody when he decided to be his own MC, DJ and producer. For him too, the drug game will help finance his productions.

"Royal Flush" is a winner hand. Bet on it!

Canada never had a visionary jazz label comparable to Blue Note or MPS however, CBC Radio-Canada was equipped and ready to document the independent jazz boom of the 60s and 70s. Ready or Not, You're about to be dazzled by an exciting set of innovative modern jazz so rare that much of it is unknown even in Canada where it was recorded. That's right this strikingly fresh-sounding collection of modal movers, spiritual swingers and Latin-flavoured cookers represents an important but little-known chapter in Canadian music history.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation sought out the finest jazz musicians in Canada and recorded them improvising live in a small combo setting for national broadcast. A few vinyl LPs of each session were pressed up and made available to the public but most this incredible music has remained in the CBC - Radio Canada archive gathering dust for more than 30 years.

Infrequent CBC airplay was the only real promotion for the jazz recordings in the RCI series and the LPs -- Manufactured in small quantities and rarely re-pressed -- weren't distributed to conventional record retailers. Instead they were sold by mail order through the CBC and made available at select gift shops in CBC office buildings across the country which made this already under exposed music that much more difficult to obtain. So while the artists involved were given the freedom to record their work as they saw fit, the downside was that relatively few people ever got to hear it.

Do Right Music went straight to the source and secured the rights from CBC to re-release these incredible lost recordings. Compiled by Do Right label boss John Kong with archive research provided by deep digging Toronto music journalist Tim Perlich, each track has been selected with discriminating fans of moving modern jazz music and the dancefloor in mind. All tracks are transferred from the original masters, and re-mastered to give us the contemporary feel. Ready or Not has already stirred up enormous interest within the collector scene as can be seen in the rising eBay bidding for extremely rare copies of the original CBC vinyl pressings.

This comp is now receiving heavy spins from your favourite danceclub jazzers, namely Nicola Conte, Toshio Matsuura, Mad Mats, Denise Benson, Toronto's Movement Collective and many more tastemaking jazz DJs around the world.

Isn't it time you showed Canadian jazz some love?

Take two Hip Hop aficionados that live, eat and breathe music, mix with equal parts clever production and drive to push the sound to the next level, and you get Circle Research. Producers, Astro the Guillotine and Nix the Finger Prince met way back when, through the common interest of records, djing and breakdancing. They formally embarked on their research mission to spread Hip Hop love in 1995, first through sharing choice headnodding cuts with audiences live at shows and later on the radio with the infamous "Circle Research Show" in Toronto on CKLN 88.1 FM

The Circle Research patented cut-scratch-and-boogie ethic that permeates their DJ sets, both at clubs and on air, naturally extends into beat-making territory. Fresh drums, basslines, and melodies drenched in jazzed out soulful funk meet heaping dollops of b-boyism and old-school Hip Hop flavour.

First taste of this potent combination was experienced on the now-classic "Speak and Read" 12" that flew off record shelves the world over. Now entering is Mulligan Stew, the first full-length from the Circle Research phenomenon that's taking Canada and the world by storm.

Each track on the album has been carefully brewed to ensure maximum flavour that keeps you smacking your lips long after the last listen. Beats concocted at CR's HQ are sauced with thoughts from some of Toronto and New York's most talented underground rhymeslayers such as Abdominal, D-Sisive, Tara Chase, Phatt Al, as well as members of Oddities and members of Pangea Project (Kamau, Change a.k.a. Yaseen, Equinox 199). Flowing like those stop-record tapes you made off the radio when you were just a kid, the mood moves from straight-up braggadocio to thoughtful reflection, clever wordplay to pure jokes, all couched in some of the most diverse production ever laid down.

"Mulligan Stew" is a snapshot of Circle Research and its extended family bringing the sustenance to feed a Hip Hop weary soul. Grab a plate and fill up!!

'Funk for the 21st Century' by Keb Darge

I am sure you are aware that the world today is filled with crap throw-away music, manufactured superstars, a plenty of talent-less bedroom dance music producers with only a few decent ones, a plenty of the experimental music that is being released should have waited until it had finished being experimented with, and critics who rave about the next new piece of shite, simply because it is the next new piece of shite.

In order to escape this horror more and more of us are turning to the timeless music of the past: Rockabilly, Jazz, Soul, Ska, Doo Wop, 60's Garage, Funk, and a few others. Me? I have concentrated on Soul and Funk. Like so many others I searched high and low, and spent a fortune seeking out new discoveries from a bygone era to satisfy my hunger. I became a curator of these lost treasures. Then one happy day a copy of Joseph Henry's "Who's the king " arrived on my doorstep. Phooar! This was one of the best early 70's records to ever have seduced my ears. I found it more exciting than any of my James Brown collection, and so did the dance floors I played it to. However it wasn't from those hallowed days, it was a brand new recording of a brand new tune. Produced by my buddies Gabe Roth and Phillip Lehman in New York. Suddenly the future began to look bright, and it was. Desco records then sent me a constant stream of these new works of art. Lee Fields, a name I was already familiar with, but then, Sharon Jones, Naomi Davis, The Sugarman Three, The Mighty Imperials, names I had never heard of, but by Christ they were great. I had had a few records from the Soul Saints in Germany before this, but they were a very limited press and suddenly stopped coming. However it was like they had thrown the Funk world a lifeline soaked in inspiration. Next came a record from Breakestra on Stones Throw records from California. Then young Kenny Dope and I were record shopping in London and the nice man behind the counter said "Mmm? Keb you might like this one, it's just in". He then produced a 45 on Blow it Hard records called "One note brown". I grabbed one copy and Kenny bought the remaining stock for his pals back home. Kenny was the man who talked me into trying my hand at producing. So I got together with long time friend and very talented man, Nick Van Gelder and formed the Imaginary Visions. Desco split up into Soul Fire and Daptone around this time, but they both kept churning out great music. I then did a gig with The New Mastersounds, the people behind "One note brown". I asked Eddie Roberts, their main man, if I could co-produce them and sign them to my Deep Funk label, the rest is history. New hard Funk bands began to spring up all over the place, from the UK to the US, from Finland to Australia. Adrian Gibson at the Jazz Cafe in London began to showcase these bands, and in doing so introduced us to Speedometer and the Soul Destroyers a band who's drummer and backbone was another long time Deep Funk collector Malcom Cato.

Today things couldn't look better, Kenny and I are starting our own label to specialise in this stuff, KD records. Sharon Jones, The Sugarman Three, The New Mastersounds have all done great albums to reach those who have not yet discovered the joy of the 45. Mine and many other Funk DJ's playlists are filling up with these new releases, and you are now holding a sampler of this great music, containing tunes that will still sound great in 2,000 years time. Plenty more to come, remember the curator has a masterplan.
